The COSMOS outdoor deployment covers about one square mile of West Harlem, New York City — roughly 15 city blocks and 5 avenues, from City College down to Columbia's Morningside Heights campus. The area is a designated FCC Innovation Zone.
Sites are named by class and number: co = core (compute/interconnect), lg = large (rooftop multi-sector base station), md = medium (building-side or street-level microcell). The naming scheme is described on the naming convention page.
Map locations and GPS coordinates are approximate, for rough reference only.
| Abbrev. | Site | Description | Institution |
|---|---|---|---|
| co1 | core 1 | CS building CRF compute — testbed core | Columbia University |
| co2 | core 2 | Datacenter at 32 Avenue of the Americas — national/international interconnect | (colocation) |
| lg1 | large 1 | Mudd building, 18th-floor rooftop — sectors s1, s2, s3 | Columbia University |
| lg2 | large 2 | North Academic Center (NAC) rooftop | City College of New York |
| md1 | medium 1 | Mudd building, 1st floor (120th Street) | Columbia University |
| md2 | medium 2 | Mudd building, 2nd floor (Amsterdam Avenue) | Columbia University |
| md3 | medium 3 | NAC street level (Amsterdam Avenue) | City College of New York |
| md4 | medium 4 | Street level, W 133rd St & Convent Ave | City College of New York |
| — | cameras | Mudd 12th floor, facing Amsterdam Ave and 120th St | Columbia University |
Which sites are currently carrying active radios is visible in the live inventory and summarised on the BED page.
Coverage measurements of the outdoor nodes transmitting 802.11g at 2.412 GHz are published under Deployment → Measurements, per sector: s1-lg1, s2-lg1, s3-lg1, md1, md2.
The pilot phase — the Columbia sites above — was completed in May 2019. Subsequent phases extend the deployment north and west across the innovation zone toward City College; the full envisioned footprint is the ~1 sq mi area described above. The COSMOS project deployment page carries the current public roadmap and site maps.
