A reservation always targets a specific domain — an isolated environment with its own console and control network. The COSMOS / ORBIT domains form three tiers:
The overall live state of every domain is on the Status dashboard; what you can currently reserve is on the Scheduler.
| Domain | Where | Description |
|---|---|---|
| BED | West Harlem rooftops and street level, New York City | The main COSMOS testbed: outdoor SDR pairs (USRP N310 + USRP-2974), 28 GHz mmWave PAAM, optical x-haul backhaul, and edge compute co-located with the radios. |
| Grid | WINLAB, Rutgers, North Brunswick, NJ | The indoor testbed, based on the ORBIT 20×20 radio grid: several hundred programmable nodes, 23 N210 and 22 X310 radios (the X310s in two MIMO mini-racks), noise-injection instrumentation, and a GPS-disciplined Octoclock reference. |
Reservable by any testbed user. Each has a focused capability:
Small isolated environments — typically 2 nodes plus a console — for developing and debugging experiments before scaling to BED or Grid:
sb4 (RF attenuator matrix), sb5 (USRP B210), sb6 (USRP X310), sb7 (USRP N210), sb9 (wired / FPGA / GPU), and sb1.cosmos (mmWave, FR3, N310s)sb2.cosmos (Columbia University), instrument.cosmos (CCNY)See the Sandboxes index for the per-sandbox specialisation table.
The deployment rig in the ORBIT room at WINLAB — fixed and mobile radio nodes with supporting devices. (Formerly named "outdoor", which was a misnomer: the rig is indoors.)
A small model intersection built inside the ORBIT grid room at WINLAB, scaled to the 120th Street × Amsterdam Avenue intersection in NYC (next to Columbia University). Wired for model-car self-driving experiments, V2X messaging, and intersection-perception research.
See the Minicity page for the inventory, network layout, and reservation notes.
Indoor industrial / advanced-manufacturing experiment site at Rutgers NJAMI / Weeks Hall, Busch Campus, Piscataway NJ — part of the Pilot 5G Factory in Weeks Hall collaboration with Siemens. Focus: low-latency, high-reliability private 5G integrated with edge computing for reconfigurable manufacturing floors.
See the Weeks page for the per-device hardware list, network planes, and the block diagram.
A number of COSMOS subdomains — including osc, accord, rrail, indigo and nebula — are allocated to specific funded research projects and are not generally available for open reservation. The O-RU pool can be scheduled into several of them.
If you are a member of one of these project teams, your sysadmin will have added you to the appropriate LDAP group.
